Brennisteinsfjöll and Krýsuvík
Updated August 2008 – This is a pristine range of mountains and large geothermal fields on the Reykjanes peninsula (southwest of Reykjavík). The fields would be developed by Hitaveita Sudurnesa for the Century Smelter at Helguvík, north of the fields. The existing power plant in the Reykjanes proper geothermal field, further southwest, would also be expanded.
Geologists and environmentalists have planned to make the area an international volcano park. If the smelter in Helguvik will go ahead the area will be devastated and nothing will come of it.
